The Specter of Populism

A closer look at the AfD in action?

A recent analysis* published by the social science think tank Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin (WZB) examines and compares the political emphasis and engagement of the current 13 “Landtag” (German state-level parliament) Alternative für Deutschand (AfD) party factions. In summary:

The AfD factions in the German state parliaments have one thing in common. They tend to concentrate on the more publicly visible work in the assembly and invest little concrete work in the committees.

Confirming my once again my own observation that the new parties of the neo-disgruntled are less representative of the politically disenfranchised than of the politically disengaged. Which is not to say their “work” warrants less attention, only that the turbulence caused by their rhetoric may merit more scrutiny than their grievances.
