Horst und Birgit Lohmeyer were honored the with Georg-Leber-Preis for their civil courage for their campaign against extreme Rightist crimes and agitation in their village and in the region. The Lohmeyers have long been the target of animosity in the hamlet of Jamel a rural community intimidated by a ruthless and vocal minority of (neo-)Fascists. (A boarder staying with the Lohmeyers at the time was in the yard watching shooting stars when he noticed the blaze, and saw someone fleeing the premises. The barn was empty at the time and no one was injured in the blaze.)

The writers union, VS (Verband deutscher Schriftsteller) of the German trade union Ver.di and German PEN have calls for donations to the non-profit organization Lobbi e.V. who support people who have become the target of Rightist violence. Lobbi e.V. is running donation drive to support the Lohmeyers and their work after this most recent onslaught.
