Re-Using Urban Space

Much as i regret that the railway system has been given up in favor of the highway and personal vehicle system, this old, overgrown marshaling yard that has been made a public park (one of several rededicated, former rail yards in Berlin) is a jewel of public space. I hope some day common spaces will become more fashionable, and not just places to stroll about in, or even worse to be used for purposes of the individual exercise (vulgar Darwinianly named: “fit-ness”) craze!

The old viaduct in Schöneberger Südgelände had been freshly spray painted. The smell of solvents still hung in the air.

Looking out of the tunnel at the Spring foliage. On the rusting girders above, the words “Empathie” and “Hope.”

Some of the soggy grout did not withstand the artistic fervor and provided a colorful mosaic of shards on the ground.
