A Long Way
A thought-provoking and reassuring article – a sort of Quo Vadis LGBT?
In his Bilerico Project guest article "We’ve Come a Long Way on Public Acceptance, But Much Work Remains", Prof. Ed.D. Warren J. Blumenfeld, College of Education, University of Massachusetts Amherst – USA calls to our attention that according to a Williams Institute study of public opinion published Nov 2014 “Public support for lesbians and gay men has doubled in the past three decades, more so than public support for any other group surveyed over the same time period.” As encouraging as this may sound, the findings are a double edged sword. The sentence can be read the other way around. Public support for other groups has increased half as quickly as that for lesbians and gay men. This would seem to indicate that we (lesbians and in particular gay men) have not taken other members of the civil rights struggle along with us.
Where this can lead to becomes quite clear in the tension that arose between the community of color and the LGBT community over so-called “gay marriage” that followed the California Proposition 8 disaster.
