Ernesto Laclau - Buenos Aeres Herrald

Ernesto Laclau, historian and political theorist passed away yesterday, 13 April 2014 in Seville, Spain. He is best known for his co-authorship with Chantal Mouffe of Hegemony and Socialist Strategy in which they break with Marxist economic determinism and class struggle as the only determining antagonisms in society in order to open the discourse to plural antagonisms, and his work On Populist Reason in which he describes what he calls “empty signifiers” resulting from an “equivalential chain”.

It is an odd and ambivalent feeling to watch the people i admire who did not die of AIDS 25 years ago now beginning to die of old age. I am please they could live to a ripe old age, though they will be missed, and at the same time i am reminded of a time when we lost so many so suddenly. It feels a little like bracing for the second wave of a tsunami.
